Farm Building Uses

Farm buildings come in all shapes and sizes and can have all kinds of uses. Some farmers will use general buildings for specific purposes whilst others will construct purpose built farm buildings. So, what are farm buildings generally used for?

1. Living - the farmer, his/her family and in some cases employees may well live in farmhouses or cottages on the farm itself.

2. Animals - if a farmer keeps animals then they will need some form of shelter even if they are out to graze most of the time. So, for example, a farmer may keep cows in the barn, hens in a hen house, horses in a stable and pigs in a piggery. Some farm buildings will have a related purpose but the animals may not sleep there. These include milking parlours where the cows will go to be milked and lambing sheds.

3. Storage - many farm buildings will be used for storage purposes. So, for example, a farmer may store hay in a barn or in a storage shed. He may have a tack room to store equipment for his horses and a workshop where he can store small tools and make repairs. They may store their grain in silos and they may have a tractor shed where they store their vehicles and equipment under cover.

The uses that a farmer puts their buildings too will depend on what their needs are and what kind of farming they do.
